How Mosfet Invented ?
The MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) was invented by a team of researchers at Bell Labs in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The team, led by Mohamed Atalla and Dawon Kahng, were exploring the properties of semiconductors and looking for new ways to use them in electronic devices.
Atalla and Kahng discovered that a layer of silicon dioxide (SiO2) could be grown on top of a silicon substrate, creating a thin insulating layer. By applying a voltage to a metal gate on top of the silicon dioxide layer, they were able to create an electric field that could control the flow of electrons through the underlying silicon.
This led to the development of the first MOSFET in 1960, which was a significant improvement over the existing bipolar junction transistor (BJT) technology. MOSFETs were smaller, faster, and consumed less power than BJTs, making them ideal for use in digital circuits.
The invention of the MOSFET had a profound impact on the electronics industry and paved the way for the development of modern microprocessors, which are built from millions of MOSFETs.
